Research on Alzheimer's Disease
We are conducting a study involving the nature of semantic deficits in Alzheimer's disease. We are interested in understanding, in particular, how different verb types might be affected in the disease and, overall, how knowledge of verbs/events are encoded in memory. This study is being conducted in collaboration with the Memory Clinic (Dr. V. Nair) at the Douglas Mental Health University Institute.
The tasks
We are running diverse tasks, mostly involving naming actions (pictures of events and short video clips).
The experiment is non-invasive and requires that participants watch short video clips of events (e.g., someone cooking) or a static picture and provide a word or a sentence that corresponds to the event depicted. A short sentence-picture matching task is also part of the protocol. And a short standardized task involving questions about language (English) is also administered.
Participants needed
We need participants who are 55 years of age or older and healthy (our control group), with no history of neurological diseases, and those who have been diagnosed with Alzheimer's (or Mild Cognitive Impairment).
The total time commitment is about 2 hours divided into two sessions of 1 hour each, a week (or two) apart. We can run this study in our lab (see links in this website) or we can come to your home (we will bring just one laptop computer). You will receive $20 as a token of our appreciation for your participation.
If you are interested in participating, please contact us by phone (514-848-2424 ext. 2210) or email to Dr. Roberto G. de Almeida -- [email protected] -- or Ms. Caitlyn Antal-- [email protected].
